Welcome to the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences

Mission Statement
The American Heart Association created the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences in 1999 to promote research and education.  Our goal is to improve understanding of mechanisms of basic cardiovascular regulation to support the development of new therapies and insights into clinical cardiovascular disease. Special emphasis is placed on integrating molecular/cellular and physiological approaches to address problems relating to functional genomics, cell signaling, myocardial biology, circulatory physiology, pathophysiology and peripheral vascular disease.

The council plays a major role in linking basic science to clinical science and is concerned with advancing and applying knowledge derived from basic science to the patient. The council strives to be inclusive and has brought together scientists from a broad range of disciplines, including anatomy, biochemistry, cellular and developmental biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, physiology and biophysics, and clinical medicine. Their efforts will result in a better understanding of diagnosing, treating and preventing cardiovascular diseases.

As volunteers, council members participate in many activities at the national and local affiliate levels to support the American Heart Association's mission of "building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke." The council also participates in scientific discoveries through:

Circulation Research is the official journal of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Research, and the council is proud to sponsor the Circulation Research Symposium annually at the AHA Scientific Sessions.

Scientific Newsletter and Journal
Members receive the council newsletter, Connections, four times a year.  It contains news items of interest to our council and short reviews on pertinent basic science or clinical issues. Newsletters are also available in a downloadable PDF format on the council Web site.

Circulation Research, the official journal of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences, is a forum for fundamental, mechanistic research of relevance to the cardiovascular system from various disciplines including biochemistry, biophysics, cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics, pathology, physiology and pharmacology. The journal publishes articles on basic cardiac and vascular biology and encourages the submission of work that uses state-of-the-art approaches to illuminate mechanisms of human disease. A special welcome is extended to translational research and to clinical research that yields fundamental insights.
