May is Stroke Month - Are You at Risk?
About 795,000 Americans will have a new or recurrent stroke this year. That’s a stroke every 40 seconds. Compared to white Americans, blacks are almost twice as likely to suffer a first-ever stroke, and they have higher death rates from stroke. The American Heart Association advocates at the local and state levels for policies that reduce the burden of secondhand smoke, increase excise taxes on tobacco to discourage smoking and work to make sure that state tobacco prevention and cessation programs are well-funded.
