Epi Chair, Christopher O’Donnell
Message from the Chair
Welcome to the American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention website. We are a multidisciplinary council dedicated to understanding the causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and applying knowledge to optimize cardiovascular health across the lifespan in diverse populations. We enthusiastically welcome anyone interested in preventing CVD to join our council.

Here, I will highlight some things we are working on. A major activity is advancing the science of our discipline through organizing our annual spring scientific conference and the population sciences components of Scientific Sessions. Our spring conference is a wonderful venue for sharing knowledge, supporting career development of early investigators and networking to grow our collaborative research efforts. We present several awards in the spring and fall, which are described on this website. Please submit your best science to these meetings! It is the "heart" of what we do!

We are very interested in fostering career development of our members and have a new and active Early Career Committee. We're also participating in the International Mentoring Program and encourage both mentors and mentees to sign up.

We are thrilled about the new AHA journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. This journal will provide an additional venue for publication of the work of our membership, and I hope you submit your best work.

We want our membership to be involved in council activities. This can be facilitated using the online Involvement Form. If you have any questions or would like to provide feedback, you can also contact me directly.

Please join or renew AHA/ASA professional membership today.

Best Wishes,

Epi Chair, Christopher O’Donnell

Mission Statement
The Council on Epidemiology and Prevention focuses on population-based approaches to preventing cardiovascular diseases. The mission of the AHA Council on Epidemiology and Prevention is to lead the discovery and translation of science related to the distribution and determinants of cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on population approaches to prevent cardiovascular disease and improve cardiovascular health.

The council's three areas of focus:

  • Observational epidemiology, including genetic epidemiology, as well as cardiovascular risk factors such as lipids, blood pressure, nutrition and exercise
  • Individual and community intervention research
  • Outcomes and health services research

The council covers a broad range of interrelated activities and cooperates actively with other scientific councils, as well as with other association groups such as the Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Interdisciplinary Council and the Functional Genomics and Transitional Biology Interdisciplinary Council.

EPI Council Involvement Form
Complete and submit the form to express your interest in a committee. We will contact you if an opportunity arises that fits your area of expertise.

Scientific Conferences
The Council on Epidemiology and Prevention will again partner with the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism to present the Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism / Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention 2011 Scientific Sessions

The following awards, organized to ensure ongoing training and to recognize and reward talented early career investigators, were presented at the conference:

Volunteer Opportunities
As volunteers, our council members participate in many activities at the national and affiliate levels to support the association's mission of "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."  Members can indicate their interest in serving the AHA and the council by marking the appropriate sections when they update their personal information in the membership database.  Volunteer opportunities include:

Pharmaceutical Roundtable Award
The American Heart Association Pharmaceutical Roundtable Award
stimulates career development in investigators interested in implementation research in primary and secondary prevention, outcomes and quality of care.
