Statements and Practice Guidelines The American Heart Association (AHA) publishes medical scientific statements on various cardiovascular disease and stroke topics. AHA volunteer scientists and healthcare professionals write the papers. The statements are supported by scientific studies published in recognized journals and have a rigorous review and approval process. Scientific statements generally include a review of data available on a specific subject, an evaluation on its relationship to overall cardiovascular disease science, and often an American Heart Association position on the basis of that evaluation. The AHA has made public processes for AHA Statement and Guideline Development. Clinical practice guidelines — many of which are written jointly with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) — suggest appropriate use of diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, and/or therapies in managing cardiovascular diseases. The ACC/AHA Guideline Task Force on Practice Guidelines has also made public methodologies and policies for the development of clinical practice guidelines in the Manual for ACC/AHA Guideline Writing Committees.
