Fellowship recognizes excellence in the field and volunteer service to the American Heart Association. Fellowship is open to scientists working in the areas of arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology, and clinical professionals who diagnose and manage patients with arteriosclerosis or thrombotic disease. Members who qualify for Fellowship but permanently reside outside the United States and Canada may be nominated for International Fellowship.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Fellowship, candidates must be active Premium Professional or Premium Professional Plus members of the AHA and affiliated with the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology (ATVB) at the time of nomination. An active member is described as a member whose dues are current.
Candidates must be nominated by an active Fellow of the AHA who is affiliated with the Council on ATVB, familiar with the candidate's work, and willing to write a supporting letter that clearly articulates the candidate’s contributions to the field and volunteer involvement in the AHA.
Persons listed on the ATVB Active Fellowship Roster are eligible to nominate candidates for Fellowship in the AHA and Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. Criteria
The criteria for Fellowship are established by the ATVB Leadership Committee in concert with the AHA’s Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee. Candidates for Fellowship must be able meet each of the criteria as defined. Please review the ATVB Fellowship Nomination Form carefully for detailed explanation of the criteria and nomination process:
-
Scientists must be making meritorious contributions to the field of arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology, as evidenced by at least four published articles.
-
Clinical professionals must provide documentation of training or experience in a specialty related to diagnosis or management.
-
Candidates must show significant and current volunteer service to the AHA. Significant and current service to the AHA can be demonstrated through participation and leadership in national, affiliate and/or local activities.
-
The criteria for election to International Fellowship are equivalent to those described for Fellows. Volunteer service can be demonstrated through activities in similar organizations/associations in their respective country/state, or through other avenues of community involvement as long as these activities are well documented and perceived as equivalent to those in the United States.
Election
Fellows are elected by ATVB Leadership Committee at its bi-annual meetings. Newly elected Fellows are acknowledged at the Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon, which is held each year during the AHA Scientific Sessions. Newly elected Fellows are officially recognized as Fellows of the American Heart Association at this time.
Nomination Submission and Deadlines
Nominations are considered two times per year. Nominations must be submitted as a complete packet via e-mail and must be received on or before the deadline dates: Jan. 15 and July 1. Incomplete nominations will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender. Nominations received after the deadline dates will be considered late and will be held until the next review cycle. The completed nomination form and supporting documents should be submitted to:

Annual Membership Dues/Fellowship Maintenance
Fellows are required to maintain membership in the AHA at the Premium Professional or Premium Professional Plus level, and a print subscription to the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology to maintain active Fellow status. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the suspension of active Fellowship status.
Emeritus Fellows are exempt from paying annual dues and subscribing to the journal. Membership dues are due in January or July of each year.
