Fellowship recognizes excellence and leadership of physicians and scientists in clinical cardiology in the private practice or academic setting, and service to the American Heart Association. Members who permanently reside outside the United States and Canada may apply for International Fellowship.
Eligibility
To be eligible for nomination as a Fellow, candidates must be active Premium Professional members of the AHA and affiliated with the Council on Clinical Cardiology at the time of nomination. Active member is described as a member whose dues are current.
Candidates must be nominated by an active Fellow of the Council on Clinical Cardiology who is familiar with his/her work and is willing to write a supporting letter that clearly articulates the candidate’s contributions to the field and involvement in the AHA. View the most recent active AHA/ASA Fellows by name or council in the online Membership Directory. To access the AHA online membership directory:
- Sign in with your my.americanheart.org username and password.
- Select Member Services.
- Under Membership Directory Search, select Advanced Search.
- Select Council.
- Under Member Type, select International Fellow or Fellows.
Criteria
The Leadership Committee of the Council on Clinical Cardiology in concert with the AHA’s Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee has established the criteria. Fellowship candidates must meet the criteria as defined. Please review the Fellowship Nomination Form carefully for detailed explanations of the criteria and the nomination process:
- Be a physician or medical scientist.
- Be board certified in cardiovascular disease.
- Recognized by peers as a competent physician consultant in cardiovascular disease who holds the highest ethical standards of professional behavior.
- Demonstrate significant and ongoing involvement in activities that reflect significant and current service to the AHA.
The criteria for election to International Fellowship are equivalent to those described for Fellows. The candidate must be of good character, ethical in his or her practice, and have good standing in the community. The candidate must be active in the practice of cardiology or in scientific or educational work related to cardiology.

The Laennec Society
Fellowship in the Council on Clinical Cardiology provides an automatic entitlement to membership in the Laennec Society for no additional fee. The Laennec Society endeavors to be the advocate of clinical cardiology emphasizing clinical investigation, pathophysiology, bedside clinical diagnosis and its application to research. To become a member of the Laennec Society, please see item 21 of the Fellowship Nomination form and check "Yes."
Election
Fellows are elected by the Council on Clinical Cardiology Leadership Committee at their bi-annual meetings. Newly elected are officially recognized as Fellows of the American Heart Association at the council’s Annual Dinner, which is held each year during the AHA Scientific Sessions.
Nomination Deadline
Nominations are accepted twice a year, and must be postmarked on or before Jan. 15 and June 1. Nominations postmarked after these dates will be considered late and will be held until the next review cycle. Submit the completed nomination form and supporting documents to:

Annual Membership Dues
Fellows are required to maintain membership in the AHA at the Premium Professional level and a print subscription to Circulation or Circulation Research to remain an active Fellow in good standing. Emeritus Fellows are exempt from paying annual dues. Membership dues are due in January or July of each year.
