American Heart Association Fellowship Council for High Blood Pressure Research

Fellowship is reserved for physicians, medical scientists and corporate professionals who are active in the areas of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Fellowship recognizes excellence in the field and volunteer service to the American Heart Association.

Eligibility
To be eligible for fellowship, candidates must be active Premium Professional or Premium Professional Plus members of the AHA and affiliated with the Council for High Blood Pressure Research (CHBPR) at the time of nomination. An active member is a member whose dues are current.

Candidates must be nominated by an active Fellow of CHBPR who is familiar with the his/her work and is willing to write a supporting letter that articulates how the candidate meets each of the criteria.   1. Sign in with your my.americanheart.org username and password.
  2. Select Member Services.
  3. Under Membership Directory Search, select Advanced Search.
  4. Select Council.
  5. Under Member Type, select International Fellow or Fellows.

Criteria
The criteria for fellowship are established by the Leadership Committee in concert with the AHA’s Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee. Candidates must meet all of the stated criteria. Please review the CHBPR Fellowship Nomination Form for detailed explanations of the criteria:

  • Must show outstanding contributions in basic, clinical or epidemiological hypertension research or in relevant basic sciences. Corporate professionals must have made contributions through outstanding basic or clinical research or outstanding corporate contributions to hypertension or heart research.  
  • Must demonstrate significant and current volunteer service contributions to the American Heart Association
  • Criteria for nominees who reside outside North America will be equivalent to those described for Fellows.  They must show service to organizations/societies/associations related to hypertension or cardiovascular research or relevant basic sciences within their country/nation or international organizations.

Election
Fellows are elected by the Leadership Committee at their bi-annual meetings.  Newly elected Fellows are acknowledged at the council’s Annual Business Meeting, which is held each year during the Annual Fall Conference and Scientific Sessions of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research.

Submission Deadlines
Nominations must be submitted electronically as a complete packet, and must be received on or before the deadline dates: March 1 and July 15. Incomplete nomination packets and hard copies will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender.  Complete nomination packets received after the deadline date will be considered late and will be held until the next review cycle.  Submit complete nomination packet to:

Annual Membership Dues /Print Journal Subscription
Fellows are required to maintain membership in the AHA at the Premium Professional or Premium Plus levels.  Elected AHA Fellows affiliated with the Council for High Blood Pressure Research must maintain a print subscription to the journal Hypertension to remain an active Fellow in good standing.

Emeritus Fellows are exempt from paying annual dues and subscribing to the journal. Membership dues are due in January or July of each year.
