The American Heart Association's peer review system is divided into four regions.  These regions represent groups of funding components that conduct peer review. Each region includes a steering committee and at least five subject-based peer review committees. Each committee reviews applications in particular science areas.

Twenty-five physicians attended the first Scientific Sessions meeting held in St. Louis in 1925. The event has since become one of the nation's largest gatherings of scientists, physicians and other health practitioners.
