Fellowship in the Stroke Council

Fellowship is reserved for physicians, scientists and healthcare professionals with a major and productive interest in cerebrovascular diseases and whose accomplishments support the stated objectives of the AHA/ASA and the Stroke Council. Fellowship recognizes and awards leadership and volunteer service within the AHA/ASA relative to cerebrovascular diseases and stroke.

Eligibility
To be eligible for Fellowship, candidates must be active Premium Professional or Premium Professional Plus members of the AHA/ASA and affiliated with the Stroke Council at the time of nomination. Active member is described as a member whose dues are current.

Fellowship candidates must be nominated by an active Fellow, International Fellow or Emeritus Fellow who is affiliated with the Stroke Council. Active Fellow is described as a Fellow whose dues and print subscription to the Stroke journal are current. View the most recent active AHA/ASA Fellows by name or council in the online Membership Directory.  To access the AHA online membership directory:

  1. Sign in with your my.americanheart.org username and password.
  2. Select Member Services.
  3. Under Membership Directory Search, select Advanced Search.
  4. Select Council.
  5. Under Member Type, select International Fellow or Fellows.

Criteria
The criteria for Fellowship are established by the Council’s Leadership Committee in concert with the AHA Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee. Candidates must meet the criteria defined by the council. Please read the Fellowship Nomination Form carefully for additional details about the criteria and nomination process:

  • Show evidence of an ongoing interest and contributions after completing training in cerebrovascular disease through research, education or care of stroke patients.
  • Demonstrate ongoing interest and contributions in stroke as evidenced by: stroke publications over the past 24 months; leadership in the stroke community; stroke education in the local community (patient, allied health professionals); stroke presentations at the national, local or international level; strong letters of support from leaders in the academic stroke community; and leadership position in training stroke physicians or allied health professionals.
  • Show significant and current involvement in the AHA/ASA at the local, affiliate and/or national level(s).

The criteria for election to Fellowship for members residing outside the United States and Canada are equivalent to those described for Fellows. An International Fellowship candidate may show service to their local stroke organization and/or through other avenues of community involvement as long as these activities are well documented and perceived as equivalent to those in the United States.

Election
Fellows are elected by the Leadership Committee at their bi-annual meetings and are officially recognized as Fellows of the AHA/ASA at the Stroke Council's Annual Business Meeting, which is held each year during the International Stroke Conference.

Nomination Deadline
Nominations are considered twice a year and must be received on or before July 15 or Nov. 20. Nominations received after these deadline dates will be considered late and will be held until the next review cycle.

Submission                                                                                                                            Nominations must be submitted as a complete packet via e-mail.  Incomplete nominations and hard copy submissions will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender. Fellowship Maintenance
Elected Fellows are required to maintain membership in the AHA/ASA at the Premium Professional or Premium Professional Plus level, and a print subscription to the Stroke journal to maintain an active Fellowship status. Emeritus Fellows are exempt from paying dues and subscribing to the journal. Membership dues are due in January or July of each year.

Minority Mentoring Program
Minority Mentoring Program
To increase the number of U.S.-based underrepresented minority scientists and clinicians who commit to research and patient care in CVD and stroke, the American Heart Association has developed an early career mentoring program.

Those accepted into the Minority Mentoring Program will become part of the clinical and research scholars committee working with national volunteer leadership and become engaged in activities and projects to build various skills and help in their professional career development.
