Fellowship in the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism

Fellowship in the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism recognizes excellence, innovation and leadership in fields related to the council's interest.

Fellowship is reserved for Premium Professional members who are scientists, physicians, clinical professionals and academicians with a major and productive interest in nutrition, physical activity, obesity or diabetes that meet the stated criteria outlined by the council.

Any active Fellow, International Fellow or Emeritus Fellow of the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism may nominate candidates for fellowship; self-nominations are acceptable with appropriate sponsorship.

Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration for fellowship, candidates must be active Premium Professional members of the AHA and affiliated with the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism (NPAM) at the time of nomination. Active member is described as a member whose dues are current.

Candidates must be nominated by an active Fellow of the council who is familiar with his/her work and is willing to write a supporting letter that clearly articulates the candidate's contributions to the field and involvement in the AHA. View the most recent active AHA/ASA Fellows by name or council in the online Membership Directory.  To access the AHA online membership directory:

  1. Sign in with your my.americanheart.org username and password.
  2. Select Member Services.
  3. Under Membership Directory Search, select Advanced Search.
  4. Select Council.
  5. Under Member Type, select International Fellow or Fellows.

Fellowship Criteria

  • Accomplishment of meritorious research in any aspect of nutrition, physical activity, obesity or diabetes.
  • Manifestation of continued interest and intention to remain active in any aspect of nutrition, physical activity, obesity or diabetes.
  • Served in a faculty or investigative position for two or more years after completing training.
  • Published three or more first-author, peer-reviewed papers addressing fundamental scientific questions.
  • Hold membership or fellowship in research or professional organizations.
  • Significant and current volunteer service to the AHA, including but not limited to the following examples:
    • a) active participation on committees or boards at the AHA local, affiliate, national or council level
    • b) participation in peer review of AHA grant applications, manuscripts submitted to AHA journals, and/or abstracts submitted to AHA meetings
    • c) participation in AHA meetings as an invited speaker or chairperson
    • d) participation and/or leadership in the areas of development/fund raising, advocacy, professional or lay education
  • The criteria for election to fellowship for members residing outside the United States are equivalent to those described for Fellows. An international fellowship candidate may show service to their local heart organization and/or through other avenues of community involvement, as long as these activities are well documented and perceived as equivalent to those in the United States.

Benefits of Fellowship
Fellows of the AHA and the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism receive the following benefits:

  • Entitlement to use the designation of Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA). This designation reflects not only the professional stature of the Fellow, but also his/her record of valuable service to the association and to the council.
  • Council newsletter and other mailings relevant to the council's affairs.
  • Reduced registration fee to the AHA Scientific Sessions and other AHA-sponsored conferences.
  • Eligibility to serve in leadership roles and on council committees.
  • Access to all online AHA scientific journals.
  • Fellowship certificate suitable for framing.
  • Access to My AmericanHeart for Professionals, an online resource that provides members with personalized content.
  • Inclusion and access to the Web-based membership directory.

Annual Fellowship Dues
Active Fellows of the council are responsible for paying $150 in annual dues at the Premium Professional Level. Failure to pay annual dues will result in your name being removed from the fellowship roll.

How To Apply for Fellowship
A proposer, who must be an active Fellow or Emeritus Fellow of the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism, is responsible for insuring the completeness of the nomination form. Incomplete nominations will not be accepted.

  • Complete the nomination form in full.
  •   Attach the following supporting documents:
    • Up-to-date curriculum vitae
    • Complete bibliography
    • Letter of recommendation from a proposer who must be an active Fellow, International Fellow or Emeritus Fellow in good standing in the council at the time of nomination. The letter of recommendation must clearly describe how the candidate meets the fellowship criteria. Please note that incomplete applications will be returned.

Election to Fellowship
Applications for fellowship will be reviewed by the Long-Range Planning/Nominating Committee to insure the criteria are met. A slate of approved candidates will be elected by NPAM Fellows at the Annual Business meeting, which is held in conjunction with the AHA Scientific Sessions.

Deadline
Nominations must be received at the AHA National Center no later than Aug. 15 for consideration at the November election. Applications postmarked after the deadline date will be held for the next review cycle.
