Sunday Morning Symposium
Please plan to attend this special symposium at 8-11:30 a.m. on March 5.  It focuses on research with American Indians and Alaska Natives in the areas of subclinical atherosclerosis, dietary, behavioral and classical risk factors and genetics of cardiovascular risk factors.

The Council on Epidemiology and Prevention and the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism of the American Heart Association gratefully acknowledge the educational grants provided for the support of this program by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Conference Description
The 46th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, in association with the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism, is a scientific program that gives participants the opportunity to learn current information about:

  • causes, mechanisms, and risk factors for atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases
  • population trends in cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors
  • results of cardiovascular disease treatment and prevention trials
  • methods of population surveillance for cardiovascular disease and risk factors
  • techniques in preventive cardiology
  • the role of nutrition in cardiovascular disease
  • outcomes research in cardiovascular disease

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should:

  • Understand risk factors and population trends in cardiovascular disease and associated factors, such as obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
  • Be familiar with methods of population surveillance, data sources, and techniques for understanding the current state of managing cardiovascular disease and risk factors.
  • Understand the results of cardiovascular disease treatment and prevention trials and appropriate interpretation of subgroup analyses.

Continuing Medical Education Accreditation - Physicians
The American Heart Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Heart Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of 19.50 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.  Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

All faculty participating in CME/CE activities sponsored by the American Heart Association will disclose to the audience (1) significant financial relationships with the manufacturer(s) of products from the commercial supporter(s) and/or the manufacturer(s) of products or devices discussed in their presentation; and (2) unlabeled/unapproved uses of drugs or devices discussed in their presentation. Such disclosures will be made in writing in course presentation materials.

Continuing Education Accreditation – Nurses
This program (06-NC-863) has been approved by an AACN-approved provider (11527) under established AACN guidelines for 23.00 contact hours, CERP Category A.

Intended Audience
The conference is for physicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, dietitians, nutritional scientists, exercise physiologists, psychologists, nurses, school health professionals, and other health scientists.  There's a focus on trainees.

Professional Development Luncheons
The Council on Epidemiology and Prevention has Professional Development Luncheons each full day of the meeting. Ten "expert roundtables" will be presented on both days on topics such as physical activity, genetics, statistics and strategies to obtain research funding. Attendance is open to conference registrants at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that registration is limited and will be closed when full.

Venue
The conference will be held at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort, 7677 North 16th Street, Phoenix, Ariz. (www.pointehilton.com).  The conference will begin at 4 p.m. on March 2 and end March 4 at 6:30 p.m.  The conference will be preceded on by a review of the NIH epidemiologic research application process (8:30- 10:30 a.m.) and the NHLBI Cardiovascular Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Behavioral Medicine Trainee Session (10:45 a.m.-3:45 p.m.).

This award-winning facility offers a wide variety of activities for adults and children, including tennis, golf and nature hikes in the adjacent Phoenix Mountain Preserve.  It houses the Hole-in-the-Wall River Ranch, a four-acre water wonderland of waterfalls, a waterslide and pools, as well as a variety of shopping and dining facilities.  The resort also offers a dynamic children's program, "Coyote Camp," which combines fun with interactive educational games and pool activities.

The reservation request must be accompanied by a one-night deposit and received no later than Jan. 27, 2006.  After this date, reservations may be at the prevailing rate and will be subject to availability.  The guest room rate is exclusive of applicable local taxes, which are 12.07 percent.  The extra person charge above double occupancy is $15 per night.  Roll-a-way beds are $15 per night.  Cancellations received within 72 hours of arrival date will be assessed a late cancellation charge of a one-night room rate plus applicable tax.
