Conference Description
This three-and-a-half-day school will focus on advances in basic and clinical hypertension research and will provide an update of the fundamental concepts and techniques used in hypertension research and clinical treatment. A major focus of this program will be to define the most important unanswered questions in hypertension research and to outline experimental approaches and methods that may be used to answer these questions in the future. In addition to the formal curriculum, troubleshooting workshops will be held, posing either a clinical or basic research problem with resolution to be provided by small groups of students with basic research and clinical faculty. Students will also work on developing a new hypertension therapy and present their new product on the last full day of school. To be considered for selection, candidates are required to submit a completed and signed application form by April 13, 2007.
Venue
The 6th Hypertension Summer School will be held at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Colorado State University is allowing the American Heart Association the use of its lecture halls as well as dormitories for housing. Conference Objectives
- Understand current clinical and basic research methods to measure, treat and model elevated blood pressure.
- Present a balanced and knowledgeable view of prehypertension and whether it should be treated.
- Be able to discuss hypertension at different levels, including neural, cardiac, renal and vascular, and understand target organ damage.
- Look forward and identify areas of research -- clinical, basic and pharmaceutical -- that are lacking in effort and that form the basis for future scientific advances.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the conference, participatnts should be able to:
- Understand current clinical and basic research methods to measure, treat, and model elevated blood pressure.
- Present a balanced and knowledgeable view of prehypertension and whether it should be treated
- Discuss the disease of hypertension at several levels, including neural, cardiac, renal, and vascular, and understand target organ damage.
- Look forward and identify areas of research - clinical, basic, and pharmaceutical - that are lacking in effort and that form the basis for future scientific advances.
Participants
This course is open to all, but trainees-graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows pursuing careers in basic or clinical hypertension research are encouraged to attend. The Summer School will be valuable for fellows studying hypertension, nephrology, cardiology, endocrinology, general medicine and clinical pharmacology. Established investigators or those with more experience who wish to refresh and update their knowledge in basic and clinical hypertension research are also encouraged to attend. The school will also be helpful to clinicians or basic scientists who may be changing direction in their research programs and who wish to learn the basic principles and concepts behind new techniques used in hypertension research.
