Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary (or lung) disease (COPD or COLD) is caused by emphysema or chronic bronchitis. COPD can cause high blood pressure in the lungs.  This can then lead to "cor pulmonale," a form of heart disease secondary to lung disease.  COPD is often due to cigarette smoking.  Treatment depends on the symptoms, which usually include shortness of breath.
