Oral Contraceptives

AHA Recommendation

Talk with your healthcare provider to evaluate all the benefits and risks of oral contraceptives (birth control pills). Here are some tips:

  • If you don't smoke and you don't have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular disease risk factors, a low-dose oral contraceptive may be recommended for you.
  • If you want to use the Pill — or are already using it — DON'T SMOKE. This is good advice whatever your age.

Your healthcare provider can help you decide what's best for your situation. You need to weigh the safety and effectiveness of other birth control methods, as well as the risks of pregnancy and childbirth itself.
