Scientific Councils The credibility of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association is largely due to our 16 scientific councils. The councils have more than 27,000 volunteer members, including physicians, scientists, nurses, healthcare professionals and other interested individuals. The councils, through representation on the American Heart Association's annual Scientific Sessions Program Committee and other appropriate committees, help determine the nature and scope of professional education activities. Council representatives help decide when it's appropriate to translate and apply knowledge to community-based public education programs. Council members can participate in various ways. They serve on council subcommittees, take part in scientific conference program planning, create strategic plans for their councils and offer guidance to mentoring programs. Members can also serve on writing groups to produce scientific statements, guidelines and advisories. Through the councils and their subspecialty interests, the association is making a multi-disciplined effort toward greater understanding of the cardiovascular system, cerebrovascular system and independent organs. What are some of the benefits of membership?
