Pharmaceutical Industry AHA Advocacy Position We aren't in a position to reasonably judge the processes of calculating drug prices, properly amortizing investments and research and development costs, or determining "proper" return on investment. However, our position is that healthcare policy should allow a reasonable return based upon industry needs for future product development. At the same time, it should seek to ensure that all Americans have the medications needed to prevent and treat illness. We view the pharmaceutical industry as critically important in the American healthcare system. It provides products that both treat and help prevent heart disease and stroke. Pharmaceutical research and development contribute a major part of the research necessary to move new science from the laboratory to the bedside. Through industry efforts, many new drugs and devices have been developed and marketed. These drugs have led to striking declines in mortality from heart disease and stroke over the past 40 years. We believe that the industry must continue as a valued partner in the healthcare system to extend those achievements into the future.
