Knowing What to Do

To successfully and healthfully lose weight—and keep it off—you’ll need to subtract about 500 calories per day to lose about 1 pound per week and about 1,000 calories per day to lose about 2 pounds per week. To accomplish this, try one, two, or all three of our eating strategies.

The Switch and Swap Approach
Substitute lower-calorie foods for high-calorie foods. You can subtract calories by making small but effective changes in your daily eating patterns.

The 75% Solution
Eat three-quarters of the amount of food that you eat now. If you are in the habit of eating too much too often, this strategy may be the simplest way for you to start working toward a healthful weight.
