Go Red For Women® Scholarship

Achieve Your Dream of Becoming a Healthcare Professional

Go Red Scholarship
The American Heart Association and Macy’s proudly announce the Go Red For Women Multicultural Scholarship, the first college scholarship dedicated to increasing the number of Hispanics in the healthcare profession.

Hispanic/Latino Health Disparities and Barriers to Care

According to the CDC, factors that contribute to poor health outcomes among Hispanics/Latinos include language and cultural barriers, lack of access to preventative care and lack of health insurance. Having a diverse physician workforce is a critical component in making care available to those who need it most.

Go Red Scholarship
The lack of diversity of medical students and healthcare professionals coupled with ineffective cultural competency training continues to produce treatment environments that are biased and contribute to health disparities.  Data from the American Medical Association suggests that although racial and ethnic minorities comprise 26% of the U.S. population, roughly only 6% of practicing physicians are Latino, African American and Native American.

Goals

  • To educate Latinas about their risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • To encourage Latinas to pursue careers in healthcare and infuse the industry with bicultural professionals.
  • To inspire health professionals to address racial and ethnic disparities early in their careers.
  • To introduce Latinas to the American Heart Association and its mission, and recruit the next generation of leaders.
